These Symptoms Are Common โ€” But Not Something to Accept

Bladder and urinary problems affect millions of women โ€” yet many feel too embarrassed to seek help, or assume that leaking, urgency or recurrent infections are simply an inevitable part of life. They are not.

Female urological conditions are among the most successfully treated in modern urology. With the right diagnosis โ€” which often requires specialist urodynamic testing, not just a GP consultation โ€” the vast majority of women experience significant or complete resolution of their symptoms.

Mr. Jesuraj provides full urological assessment, including in-clinic urodynamic studies, in a private setting where you will be seen by the consultant himself โ€” not a nurse specialist or junior doctor.

You should seek assessment if you experience:

  • Leaking urine when you cough, sneeze or exercise
  • A sudden, urgent need to urinate that is hard to control
  • Leaking before you reach the toilet
  • Getting up more than once a night to urinate
  • Needing to urinate more than 8 times a day
  • Two or more urinary tract infections in 6 months
  • Pelvic pain or pressure
  • Difficulty emptying the bladder fully
  • Blood in the urine

Stress Urinary Incontinence

Very Common

Stress incontinence is leaking of urine triggered by physical activity that increases abdominal pressure โ€” coughing, sneezing, laughing, running or lifting. It is caused by weakness of the pelvic floor or urethral sphincter, often following childbirth or hormonal changes.

What you may experience

  • Leaking when coughing, sneezing or laughing
  • Leaking during exercise or lifting
  • Small to moderate amounts of urine loss
  • No warning before leaking occurs

Overactive Bladder & Urge Incontinence

Highly Treatable

Overactive bladder (OAB) causes a sudden, intense urge to urinate that can be difficult or impossible to control. When leaking occurs before reaching the toilet, this is called urge incontinence. OAB affects quality of life profoundly but responds very well to treatment.

What you may experience

  • Sudden, overwhelming urge to urinate
  • Leaking before reaching the toilet
  • Urinating 8 or more times in 24 hours
  • Waking at night to urinate (nocturia)
  • Symptoms triggered by cold, running water

Treatment options

Mixed Incontinence

Requires Full Assessment

Many women experience a combination of both stress and urge incontinence. This is known as mixed incontinence and is important to diagnose correctly โ€” because the treatment for stress incontinence can sometimes worsen urge symptoms, and vice versa. Urodynamic testing is essential.

What you may experience

  • Leaking with both physical activity and urgency
  • Unpredictable pattern of symptoms
  • Previous treatments that only partially helped
  • Symptoms that vary day to day

Recurrent Urinary Tract Infections

Root Cause Investigation

Recurrent UTIs โ€” defined as two or more infections in six months โ€” should be investigated by a urologist to identify any underlying structural or functional cause. Repeated courses of antibiotics without investigation misses the root cause and contributes to antibiotic resistance.

When to see a specialist

  • Two or more UTIs in 6 months
  • UTIs with fever or loin pain (kidney infection)
  • UTIs not clearing with standard antibiotics
  • Blood in urine associated with infection
  • Infections in post-menopausal women

Painful Bladder Syndrome

Including Interstitial Cystitis

Painful bladder syndrome (also called interstitial cystitis) causes chronic pelvic pain, pressure or discomfort associated with the bladder โ€” often with urgency and frequency but without infection. It is frequently undiagnosed or misdiagnosed and requires specialist urological assessment.

What you may experience

  • Persistent pelvic pain or pressure
  • Pain that improves temporarily after urinating
  • Frequency and urgency without infection
  • Pain with sexual intercourse
  • Symptoms that flare with certain foods or stress

Treatment

Cystoscopy & hydrodistension Bladder instillations Dietary management Pain management

Haematuria โ€” Blood in Urine

Always Investigate

Blood in the urine in women โ€” whether visible or detected on a dipstick test โ€” should always be investigated by a urologist. Although causes are often benign (infection, kidney stones), it can indicate bladder or kidney pathology that requires prompt assessment.

Types

  • Visible haematuria โ€” pink, red or brown urine
  • Microscopic haematuria โ€” detected on dipstick
  • With or without pain
  • Associated with or without infection

Investigation

Urine cytology Flexible cystoscopy Renal ultrasound CT urogram

Voiding Dysfunction

Often Overlooked

Voiding dysfunction describes difficulty fully emptying the bladder and is often overlooked in women. It can cause recurrent infections, bladder discomfort and in severe cases overflow incontinence. Urodynamic assessment is the key to an accurate diagnosis.

What you may experience

  • Feeling the bladder hasn’t emptied fully
  • Slow or interrupted urinary stream
  • Needing to strain to urinate
  • Recurrent infections with residual urine
  • Dribbling after urination

Urodynamic Assessment โ€” Understanding Exactly What’s Happening

Urodynamics is a series of tests that measure how well the bladder, sphincter and urethra store and release urine. It is the gold standard for diagnosing the cause of incontinence and bladder problems โ€” and at Tees Urology, it is performed in-clinic by Mr. Jesuraj himself.

Many women spend years on treatments that don’t work because the underlying cause was never properly identified. Urodynamics changes that โ€” giving a precise diagnosis that guides targeted, effective treatment.
